Music for mood regulation

Music for mood regulation thumbnail

Music is widely used to support mood regulation strategies, yet little is known about how those strategies interact with specific musical features and individual differences to shape effectiveness and experience. The role of technology in governing and mediating these processes also remains underexplored.

This project addresses these gaps by combining audio feature analysis and psychological research to:

  • Characterize music for different regulatory processes, such as entertainment, diversion, or relaxation.
  • Examine the role of individual differences (e.g. age, mental health, musical background) on music and strategy selection for mood regulation.
  • Evaluate attitudes and experiences around incorporating AI into music-based mood regulation and wellbeing.
