Lok Yan Lam joined the Centre for Music and Science in 2025 as a PhD student under the supervision of Peter Harrison, and is fully funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Graduate Scholarship. Her research focuses on how different musical and textual components contribute to perceived emotions in songs. She holds a B.Sc. in Psychology from the University of Potsdam and an M.Sc. in Cognitive Neuroscience from Freie Universität Berlin. Before coming to Cambridge, Lok Yan worked in multiple cognitive neuroscience laboratories in Germany as a student research assistant, utilising EEG and fMRI techniques. Her master’s thesis, also supervised by Peter, focused on benchmarking probabilistic models of music expectation. Outside of research, Lok Yan is an enthusiastic choral singer and is currently a member of the Girton College Chapel Choir.
