Rebecca Whiteman

Rebecca Whiteman

PhD student

Biography:

Rebecca is a PhD student in the Centre for Music and Science, working under the supervision of Prof. Ian Cross.

She is investigating the processes of social group formation and the potential role of musical interaction in this context. This project draws on our understanding of social cognition, affiliation and group behaviour, and seeks to outline the main processes at work when people interact and make music together. This will develop understanding of how people might relate within and between groups, thus how better inter-group relations can be fostered.

Rebecca read Music at Selwyn College, Cambridge, graduating with a starred first in June 2015. She then gained a distinction in her MSc Psychology from the University of Nottingham in September 2016. She is an active musician, holding an Instrumental Award for chamber music. She performs regularly on the cello and flute and sings with the St. John's Voices.
